Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18 on the 18th of July 1994. She was also raised in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black father and a white mother. She grew up mainly with her mother's family. Russell recalled how as a child she was viewed as unwelcome by her peers due to the complexion of her skin. The family was struggling financially and were forced to move 16 times to get her father's job. Russell shared that despite all the struggles it was always the opportunity to reinvent, to develop something new. Russell's parents were financially struggling and she was constantly on the move. Russell was only 18 when she began her first acting class. She used her work savings to buy a car, and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. Once her money was gone her home was returned to work, until she had enough earnings to be able to audition again. This continued for four consecutive years, until she finally secured her first TV role on television.
